Mike Corey busts a b-boy move at Machu Picchu in Peru. The local man was in the South American country filming and exploring as part of The Best Travel Job Ever contest.
"It's been quite a wild ride," he says, one that has so far taken this local resident to South America.
This all began, he said, with a video contest a year ago to win the best job in the world on Hamilton Island in Australia.
"A friend of one of my parents said, 'Mike, that would be perfect for you, you should apply,'" says Corey.
"I did, I was one of like 35,000 people who applied, and I did fairly well."
He was one of the top 200 chosen to go through testing. He didn't get that job, but it was the motivation he needed to get involved in a Canada-wide travel blog contest called The Best Travel Job Ever in April of this year.
"There was a two-month period where you could submit videos and I found out about (the contest) about a month in, so that gave me time to analyse the other videos and really tailor mine to being unique," he says. "I'm a firm believer that being different stands out and gets you noticed."
It worked out. Corey made it into the top six and was sent to Peru for two weeks with a fellow contestant.
"The top 25 most voted videos by the public were looked at by the judges, and the judges picked their favourite top six people to be grouped into three groups of two."
Each group was sent to a different place. Corey and his partner from Saskatchewan went to Peru, another pair went to China and the third went to Europe.
"I was given a camera, I was given some Roots money for clothing and I was given the trip for free, then had to video blog the whole trip," he said.
"Our job was to document our trip to Peru and when we came back to make three five-minute videos."
Each of the videos was for a different demographic.
He had to make one for an audience in his age range of 18-25, one for couples in their 30s and a third targetting Baby Boomers.
"That was kind of tough. I can make a video for my age group really well," he said, but to put together the others he got opinions for people in those are categories, including family, friends and people from other countries he met while travelling.
He was surprised by some of what he learned.
Corey's videos are now posted at http://besttraveljobever.com/. He hopes people not only go check out his work, but that they vote for what he has created before the polls on this video contest close Aug. 11 at 12:01 p.m. (Eastern time).
The winner for the next stage will be announced Aug. 15.
"They pick two out of the top six and it doesn't have to be from the same team," says Corey.
Those who get picked get another trip to a mysterious exotic location."
His best guess as to where this might be is Africa, judging by where participants have gone so far.
"We get another trip, a new camera, $2,000 and more Roots money," he said. "It's pretty exciting, for sure."
Though he'd love to go on that trip, already this has been a wonderful experience as far as Corey is concerned.
He has discovered a love of making videos and a passion for travel.
"If I could do any kind of job where I can travel and show people the world and how amazing the big things are and the small things and the culture, I would be the happiest guy in the world," he said.
"There are so many cool things to try and one of my mantras is 'try anything once.'
"There are so many cool opportunities to grow as a person and learn about the world."
One of the six semi-finalists, Jason Hosler from Squamish, BC sent us this article published in the Squamish Chief newspaper on July 9, 2010 about his and fellow contestant, New Brunswick-based Mike Corey's, amazing trip to Peru. The two were challenged to travel, take pictures and record their adventures during the two week long trip. Now that they've returned home they must compile all of their pictures and videos into a video blog. Voting for the grand prize winner begins on July 19.
This is a great shot taken from behind the guard house. Jason and I were hiking to the Sun Gate ruins, the entrance to Machu Picchu from The Inca Trail.
